NEW OR USED?

NEW PIANOS
If you buy from a reputable retailer, buying a
new piano should be no problem. The choice of
instrument is yours, and the amount you pay will
in general determines the quality of the instrument.
Buy the one you have tried, because another of
the same make and model could be different in
touch and tone. The advantage of buying a brand
new instrument is insurance - a warranty and new
materials. The cost of the piano may include
delivery within the city. New pianos are generally
sold with a 'free' tuning. This allows a representative
of the store to inspect the instrument and correct
any deficiencies. Some stores will allow you to use
the piano technician of your choice for the initial
service. This is good because the technician is
working for you, and not for the store.

New pianos do have some disadvantages, too.
Obviously, you will pay more for a new instrument
than for a used one. They have less tuning
stability because the strings are still stretching.
Most manufacturers recommend four tunings the
first year, and two to three per year for the next
five years.

USED PIANOS
Again, buying from a reputable retailer, tuner or
technician should not be a problem, as the it will
have been professionally restored where necessary,
and it should be covered by a warranty.

When buying a used piano privately, be careful. You
may be buying an instrument that will cost more to
fix than it's fair value. Many pianos have had hard
use, and infrequent service for most of their lives.
There are a some tests you can do yourself
to determine if that used piano is worth buying and
putting money into. Many of our clients do just that.
They find a used piano that needs work and we
make it look and sound like new.
